YouTube is setting out to improve users experience by providing a more accurate search results. The popular video-sharing application is optimising search results by launch of search results by hashtags. Due to the update users will be able to look for videos using hashtags. Search results by Hashtags are not a new development but were introduced in 2018. The results
were however subpar. The search results were not accurate and often i included content that was not even related to the hashtag. The new improvements will make sure that users only view the content containing the hashtag like file sharing more. Furthermore, users will be able to access a particular hashtag
search results page by clicking into any automatically linked hashtag displayed on YouTube.
The hashtags will appear above the video title, making them clearly visible. The new search results work a little different, when a user searches via a hashtag they will see the “best” videos on top. What we can infer from this is the most viewed or popular videos will be at the top of the list whereas videos from less developed channels will be at the bottom.
Another interesting feature is that each hashtag page shows how many channels have published a video containing the searched hashtag. The video count will be on top. This is a major help since if you are looking to see if a topic is popular or not, you can simply search the hashtag and determine its popularity by looking at the count. The following feature is especially useful for the marketing industry and content creators.
YouTube has assured users that it will keep updating the hashtag search results since it is far off from where it should be. One downside of the hashtag search results is results are algorithmically arranged in one long feed, which isn’t always the best solution for users and only serves to benefit developed channels. Additionally, when users search using hashtags, all the filters are
removed, an inconvenient effect. No one does hashtags better than Twitter hence it would be beneficial if YouTube followed Twitter’s approach towards hashtags. Such as Twitter allows users to follow topics in real-time,
an option not available on YouTube which make it difficult to discover new content.
In order to truly optimize search results via hashtags YouTube needs to make the filters available for hashtags and device a simpler way to view results in reverse chronological order. Since it is helpful to users and give the less known channels an opportunity to shine.
